There is a quiet but meaningful effort underway here in Central Oregon. It's one that speaks to how our region is growing and what we value as a community.
Central Oregon Center for the Arts (COCA) is actively working toward the development of a new performing arts center, and the process of identifying the right location is now underway. This next step, site evaluation, may not be the most visible part of the project, but it is one of the most important.
The vision is thoughtful and ambitious: a space that could include a main performance hall, a flexible black box theater, and dedicated areas for rehearsal, education, and community gatherings.
What makes this effort particularly timely is the reality of where things stand today. Central Oregon's arts community has grown significantly, but the available venues have not kept pace. With limited seating at existing theaters, many organizations are working within constraints that weren't designed for the scale of performances they are now producing.
At the same time, this isn't simply about building a new structure. It reflects something broader. As Bend continues to evolve, there is a growing recognition that a vibrant community is shaped not only by outdoor access and natural beauty, but also by the spaces that bring people together. Bend needs additional places for music, theater, and shared experience, especially in the colder months when outdoor performances are not a possibility.
Projects like this take time. There are still questions to answer: where it will be built, how it will be funded, and what the final design will look like. But momentum is building, and the groundwork is being laid. In fact, in May the Central Oregon Center for the Arts (COCA) is expected to announce the location of the upcoming new Center for the Performing Arts.
